Context
Overview
In my role as a UX Researcher and Designer, I took the responsibilities of conducting user research, synthesizing data, participating in the ideation process, took charge in designing the Collaborative goal function and provide design support to my team to ensure the best possible user experience for our product. As a team, we worked together in completing each milestones, fostering a seamless and cohesive workflow.
Our Goal
Starting from our initial problem recognition on the hardships younger generations are facing with money challenges because they haven't been taught proper financial literacy, we wanted to build something viable that empowers users to learning and practicing the foundations of financial literacy, so that they can make smart choices and build a solid future.
Key Goals:
Simplifying Financial Management: We aimed to design a product that will motivate and help users build long-term financial security and embark on their learning journey without any barriers or complications.
Real-world Refinements: We were driven to build a product that reflects real-world challenges faced by our users, but also remained open to iterative improvements through continuous testings and user feedback
Our goal is to simplify financial management for young individuals, building long-term financial security. We believe that education and empowerment are key to achieving financial freedom.
Initial problem discovery
The Solution
Younger generations are stuck dealing with money challenges because they haven't been taught proper financial literacy. By learning and practicing the foundations, they can make smart choices and build a solid future. From this, we identified that while our users have various financial goals and the will to learn financial literacy, they don’t know how to accomplish these financial objectives, who to ask or where to begin.
This leads us to the question of how we can help students and young adults learn to manage their money, set and achieve financial goals through practicing financial literacy. Young people feel overwhelmed by the pressure to save and invest, but are intimidated by the complexities of financial literacy.
Flint is an app for students to manage their finances and build long-term financial security. It offers budgeting tools, educational resources on financial literacy, and personalized investment recommendations. Users can set financial goals, track their progress, and get valuable insights and tips. We believe that education and empowerment are key to achieving financial freedom and Flint has the ability to revolutionize and redefine the way teenagers and young adult manage and utilize their money.
DESIGN
Setting Up Personalized Milestones
Users will have the choice to personalize the areas that want to focus on, such as budgeting, setting up goals, financial management, and investment goals. These tailored results will be based on the questions proposed at three different checkpoints. The first one will be general information, the second saving goals and expenses, and the third will be investment related. After gathering this data, the user will receive a summary of recommendations. The intention is to create a platform that is catered to user needs.

DESIGN
Collaborative Goals with Friends and Family
In this flow, users can create a shared goal with other individuals who also have the app, this feature can be made with friends or family members, with the intention of collaborating and saving towards a common goal. The amount and timeline for the goal is set by one individual and invitations will be sent to those they’ve selected. The invitation will then be seen by those who received the invitation and accepted and the user who created the goal will be notified. The intention is to encourage collaboration and engagement by the incorporating community.

Design
Our app requires users to trust us with their money it was crucial to create an aesthetic that affirmed security and credibility. Our colour palette works to achieve this goal while being cohesive and accessible. Our type choices reflect the same values, using a san-serif font with low contrast ensures text that is legible no matter the treatment. Lastly, our components utilize Google’s Material U.I 3 to deliver an experience that feels familiar to users, creating a sense of security and trust.
For the pie chart, we also ran a colour contrast test to see how our four main colours will appear to people with different types of colour blindness and it had enough contrast so we continued to use those colours.
Outcome
Following extensive rounds of usability testing and iterative design enhancements, our team has designed a financial app equipped with indispensable features for MVP. Despite facing challenges in securing an investment partner, the project has been a rewarding experience. Working closely with other designers who share our vision has cultivated an environment conducive to learning, mutual growth, and ongoing refinement as designers. Our financial app stands as a testament to our commitment to empowering users with personalized financial goals, collaborative money management, and enhanced financial literacy, demonstrating the resilience and innovation of our collaborative efforts.
Takeaways
1.
Design iterations is crucial in achieving optimal design solutions. Whenever uncertainties arose, our collaborative efforts led to a wealth of design iterations. This iterative approach not only took the project forward but ultimately culminated in a financial app tailored to the preferences and needs of young adults.
2.
The essence of successful collaboration lies in effective teamwork. Throughout the project, every team member demonstrated exceptional responsiveness, fostering an environment where ideas were freely exchanged during brainstorming sessions. Leveraging each individual's strengths maximized our collective potential, facilitating a seamless progression of the project and the development of a financial app that resonates with the dynamic preferences and requirements of young adults.
Next step
Moving forward, I will continue making adjustments to ensure that Flint has an intuitive interface and the capability to motivate users to learn and practice financial literacy. My goal is to add in Financial Literacy 101 lesson to help them achieve their financial objectives and bring them many steps closer to attaining financial freedom through our app.
